| How the maps were made -The Dark Sky Maps were created
by Roger Blake based on the 1990 and 2000 census and available satellite data. The computer model was roughly similar
to "Walkers Law", but significantly modified to closely approximate satellite based maps obtained during the 1990's.
The comparisons to the satellite data provide a broad range of verification over a large
area of the U.S. The 2000 census was extrapolated to 2005 based on the differentials between the 1990 and 2000 census.
These maps represent sky conditions as would be
seen near sea level. Actual conditions may me darker at high
elevations.
Independent verification included personal visual observations at several different sites in the U.S. covering a wide range of
light pollution conditions (map colors).
The maps are printed on 8.5"x11" 10pt gloss (card stock). 23 maps cover the entire U.S. with significant overlap.
